Combat shirts have become standard kit for modern military, law enforcement and professional users. Designed to be worn under body armour and load carriage, they put durable fabric where the wear happens and lightweight, breathable fabric where the heat builds up.

But here's the thing most buyers only discover after a few hard months in the field: most combat shirts are built with one fabric combination for every environment. The same shirt gets marketed for the desert, the jungle, the range and the boat — and it can't be right for all of them.

Whether you're operating professionally, training hard, or building out your kit, this guide covers what actually matters when choosing a combat shirt — and how to match the shirt to where you'll actually wear it.

Why combat shirts exist in the first place

The combat shirt was born out of a simple problem: wearing a full uniform shirt under body armour cooks you. Plate carriers trap heat against the torso, and heavy woven fabric under armour adds bulk, holds sweat and causes hotspots under straps.

The solution was a hybrid garment. Durable woven fabric on the sleeves and shoulders, where abrasion happens — and a lightweight, moisture-wicking stretch fabric on the torso, where the armour sits and the heat builds. Everything else about choosing a combat shirt flows from how well a given design executes that idea for your conditions.

The one-fabric problem

Here's the insight that took large militaries years and a lot of field feedback to act on: fabric that works in a temperate climate is actively wrong in a tropical or maritime one.

A useful case study is the US Army's Improved Hot Weather Combat Uniform program. After sustained jungle rotations, soldier feedback drove a redesign that moved to a lighter fabric blend with more than double the air permeability of the standard combat uniform (70 CFM versus 30 CFM) and cut drying time by around 30 minutes. Fewer layers, fewer seams, faster drying — because in the tropics, a wet shirt isn't just uncomfortable. Fabric that stays saturated causes chafing, hotspots under carrier straps, and over multiple days contributes to the skin problems that genuinely degrade people in the field.

The lesson applies directly to combat shirts: the "standard" combat shirt formula — NYCO sleeves, mid-weight wicking torso — is a great all-rounder, but it is a compromise. If you spend most of your time in one type of environment, a shirt built for that environment will outperform it.

What actually matters in any combat shirt

Before we get to environment, the fundamentals. These apply to every combat shirt, in every climate.

1. Fabric construction

The torso fabric should wick moisture, dry fast and breathe under armour — if it traps heat or absorbs sweat, the shirt fails at its main job. The sleeve fabric should resist abrasion: NYCO ripstop, Cordura-reinforced weaves or durable stretch fabrics like Tweave are the benchmarks. Cheaper shirts often look identical in photos; the difference shows up at the six-month mark.

2. Fit and mobility

A combat shirt should be close fitting without being restrictive. Too loose and it bunches under armour; too tight and it binds when you reach or climb. Look for an athletic cut, genuine stretch through the torso, articulated sleeves, and enough hem length to stay tucked when you're moving. The goal is a shirt that disappears under a plate carrier.

3. Sleeve durability

Sleeves take most of the abuse — dense scrub, range work, vehicles, rock, boat gunwales. Reinforced elbows (ideally with internal pockets for removable pads) and quality stitching are what separate a shirt that lasts years from one that lasts a season.

4. Cuff design — the detail everyone forgets

Here's a spec-sheet line almost nobody reads before buying, and almost everybody has an opinion about after six months: how the sleeve ends at the wrist.

Brands treat this very differently. Some run a fixed, tapered cuff — sometimes elastic, sometimes not. Others use a simple hemmed opening, wide or narrow depending on the cut. Each fixed approach picks a compromise for you: a narrow cuff seals out debris and sun but constricts the forearm, fights your watch and is miserable to roll up; a wide opening breathes and rolls easily but flaps around, snags, and lets debris straight in.

This isn't a theoretical gripe. A recent thread on r/tacticalgear is a good illustration: the poster found his issued combat shirts so tapered at the wrist that he couldn't roll the sleeves past mid-forearm without it "cutting off circulation", and the replies turned into a brand-by-brand comparison of wrist openings — narrow but elastic, narrow and rigid, wide but non-stretch. His conclusion is the one experienced users keep arriving at: cuffs need to be loose enough to roll comfortably and leave space for airflow, because a skin-tight cuff also soaks up whatever you're working in and holds it against your skin.

The design that sidesteps the whole compromise is an adjustable closure — a wide Velcro tab that lets you set the cuff for the day's work: cinched down over or under gloves and sealed against debris, opened up for airflow, or rolled and held out of the way for hot work. 5. Pocket design and access

Sleeve pockets matter more than most people realise, because they're the only pockets you can reach with a plate carrier or chest rig on. Dual-access designs (zip plus top access) let you get to contents without stripping kit. Loop fields for patches and IFF, a pen sleeve and somewhere to stow eye pro round out a well-thought-out sleeve.

6. Heat management

This is the reason the category exists. Breathable torso fabric, moisture management, ventilation options (rollable cuffs, a collar that opens up) and rapid drying. How much weight you put on this criterion depends entirely on where you work — which brings us to the real decision.

Match the shirt to the environment

In sustained heat and humidity, every gram of fabric and every minute of drying time counts. People who've worked in the tropics will tell you the same things: cotton content holds water, wet fabric destroys skin over days, and the shirt that dries during a halt beats the shirt that's still damp at dawn.

A dedicated hot weather shirt changes the fabric package accordingly. Maritime work is its own problem set. You're not managing sweat — you're managing immersion. In the littoral space the cycle is wet, dry, wet again: spray on the run in, soaked through on insertion, then wind-chilled on the extract. Fabric that absorbs water gets heavy, stays cold, and abrades skin loaded with salt. And the abrasion environment — boat decks, gunwales, rock, ladders — is brutal on sleeves.
