6 COLOR DESERT CAMOUFLAGE
Nicknamed “Chocolate Chip” camo for its distinctive black and white rock-like blotches, the 6-Color Desert pattern was the U.S. military’s first widely adopted desert camouflage. Developed in the 1960s but not fielded until the 1980s, it was designed for use in rocky, arid environments with high contrast and minimal vegetation.
The pattern saw its most prominent use during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the early 1990s, where it became instantly recognizable on the uniforms and gear of coalition forces. While visually striking, its effectiveness in the actual desert terrain of the Middle East was limited—ultimately leading to the development of the more subdued 3-Color Desert pattern that followed.
Despite its relatively short operational lifespan, 6-Color Desert remains a cult favourite among military history buffs, collectors, and those chasing old-school authenticity. At Platatac, we honour that legacy by offering a selection of classic gear in this iconic pattern—built with today’s battle-proven materials and craftsmanship.
