Description

This cold cast bronze figurine depicts walking wounded Private William Johnson, supported by Sergeant Gordan Ayre, both of 58/59 Battalion, fording a fast flowing creek in the rain, near Salamaua, New Guinea July 1943. Wounded by a Japanese grenade, Private Johnson has a compression bandage to his forehead and wounds to both arms. Sergeant Ayre subsequently won the Military Medal for his performance during the Salamaua action. 


The famous image that inspired this sculpture was taken from the ASSAULT ON SALAMAUA newsreel by AIF newsman Damien Parer. The newsreel and images associated with this action are held by the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.
