Platatac SPUR Tropical Pack

Had an older model of this since some time around 2008. Held up strong, covered layers in self applied paint. Finally failed when one of the struts ripped out the pocket that holds it in place - though I guess still useable over body armour where I kept the mesh frame flush against the back anyway. The waterproofing layer on the inside of the fabric peeled away years ago I guess from me leaving it wet and/or exposure to oil, bug spray etc but that never bothered me. Trying to work out now if I replace it was another one or get something slightly different.

Got mine in Ranger Green. I’ve taken this pack on numerous outings and overnights, hiking, rock climbing, and snowshoeing in Washington state, USA.

Pros;
•Outside pockets are spacious and will fit an e-tool, Jetboil, canteen with a Sawyer filter, wet weather gear, etc. The pass throughs are a nice touch for carrying an axe or shovel.
•Main pocket has enough room for a 3-season sleep system and a few freeze dried meals. I have fit a winter sleeping bag in it, but it is tight. It holds a water bladder very well. The mesh zipper pockets are big and great for organization.
•Smaller pocket has decent space for an M4 mag bandolier and more and similar mesh organizers to the main pocket.
•The shoulder and waist straps are very comfortable and the adjustments are great to get it high on your back. The wire frame in the back holds the weight very well, especially when the bag is loaded to the brim.
•Top cinch straps are nice for keeping the bag tight. I can fit a sleeping mat, tarp, snowshoes, or climbing rope attached to the top. This is also where I attach an 18” machete on top of the mat/tarp. The straps don’t move at all when I’m hiking.
•It’s very durable. I’ve slid down rocks while wearing it and thrown and dropped it from good distance and it can take a beating. Also, even though the fabric is thick cordura the bag is super lightweight.

Cons;
•Price is pretty steep, but for the quality I guess it might be worth it.I got mine secondhand for $150 which was a steal.
•The internal zippers are a a bit of a pain to find in low lighting. Probably user error, but I replaced the tabs on them with bright pink 550 cord to more easily spot them.
•I wish it had a couple columns of PALS webbing above and between the side pouches, and on the bottom of the pack for strapping other equipment. This would make using the pass throughs on the pouches easier with long skinny items (like my machete) so they don’t fall through, and it would be nice to put my sleeping mat on the bottom if I’m bringing it. This is personal preference, and I will be sewing them onto the bag.

With all that being said, this is a fantastic bag. Great for day trips rock climbing Perfect for a 3 day pack in warmer weather, but works for an overnight in the snow as well. Even if you pay full price, I’m sure you won’t regret it.

Looks ally, feels ally and is super well made. Love it. Didn't know it was coming from Australia. So be wary of import taxes, but daysack is superlative
